Dr. John Irvine is a professor of chemistry at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where he leads a team of 30 researchers. The holder of an Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council senior fellowship, Irvine focuses his research on solid state ionics, new materials, ceramic processing, electrochemistry, fuel cell technology, hydrogen, photo-electrochemistry, electrochemical conversion, and heterogeneous catalysis.
Irvine holds a degree in chemical physics from The University of Edinburgh and a PhD in photo-electrochemistry from the University of Ulster. He did his postdoctoral studies working with researcher Anthony West in Aberdeen, Scotland, and was subsequently appointed to a BP/RSC fellowship, lectureship and senior lectureship at the University of Aberdeen.
Irvine was a visiting professor at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, in 1994, moving from there to the University of St. Andrews as reader and then professor of inorganic chemistry.
