Dr. Raj Kalaria is deputy director of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Centre for Brain Ageing and Vitality at Newcastle General Hospital in the United Kingdom, and a professor of Neuropathology (Cerebrovascular Disease) at Newcastle University. He serves on the executive and scientific boards of the Alzheimer’s Research Trust in the UK, the International Brain Research Organisation in Paris, and the International Society for Vascular Behavioural and Cognitive Disorders (Vas-Cog). He also serves on the review panel of the Fogarty International Centre in the US. Widely published, he also serves on the editorial boards of European Neurology, Alzheimer Disease & Associated Disorders, and NeuroReport.
Kalaria has received a Gold Medal from President Abdou Diouf of Senegal, and was appointed officer of the Ordre National du Lion for services to promote research in and teaching of neurosciences in Africa.
He holds a PhD from King’s College London and is a fellow of The Royal College of Pathologists in the UK. His clinical research interests lie in the neuropathology of dementia and cerebroavascular disease, and in vascular dementia, Alzheimer's disease and stroke.
